CV638 is a live attenuated oral vaccine candidate developed by the Finlay Vaccine Institute in collaboration with the National Center for Scientific Research (CNIC) for the prevention of cholera. The vaccine utilizes a genetically modified strain of *Vibrio cholerae* O1 El Tor biotype, Ogawa serotype, known as strain 638. This strain has been engineered to lack the *ctxA* gene, which encodes the toxic A subunit of the cholera toxin, thereby preventing the development of diarrheal symptoms while allowing the bacteria to colonize the human intestine and induce a protective immune response. CV638 is designed to provide rapid and long-lasting mucosal immunity against cholera outbreaks and has been evaluated in clinical trials in Cuba.
