CVac is an immunotherapeutic agent developed as a cancer vaccine, primarily for ovarian cancer. It uses an ex vivo dendritic cell priming technology involving a mannan fusion protein (MFP), where a fusion protein of MUC1 and Glutathione S-transferase is coupled to oxidized polymannose. Dendritic cells are collected from the patient via leukapheresis, exposed to the MUC1 antigen conjugated with mannan outside the body, and then reintroduced into the patient to stimulate an immune response against cancer cells overexpressing MUC1. CVac was developed by Prima BioMed in Australia and advanced through Phase II clinical studies between 2001 and 2015. Clinical development was discontinued after inconclusive results in ovarian cancer trials. CVac is not related to CureVac or its mRNA-based products despite similar naming conventions.
