Overview

CVD 1208S-122 is a live-attenuated, oral vaccine candidate designed to provide broad protection against both *Shigella flexneri* 2a and enterotoxigenic *Escherichia coli* (ETEC). Developed by the Center for Vaccine Development (CVD) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the vaccine utilizes an attenuated *S. flexneri* 2a strain (CVD 1208S) as a live vector. This vector is genetically engineered to express key ETEC antigens, specifically the colonization factor antigen I (CFA/I) and the B subunit of the heat-labile enterotoxin (LTB). By mimicking a natural infection without causing disease, the vaccine aims to stimulate mucosal and systemic immunity in the gastrointestinal tract, targeting the primary bacterial causes of moderate-to-severe diarrhea in children in developing countries and travelers.
