CVL-2001 is an experimental, orally available small molecule inhibitor targeting sterol 14-demethylase (CYP51), a key enzyme in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway. It is being developed by Convelo Therapeutics as a potential first-in-class therapy to promote remyelination in multiple sclerosis (MS) and other demyelinating diseases. By inhibiting CYP51, CVL-2001 aims to accelerate the differentiation of oligodendrocytes—the brain cells responsible for making and repairing myelin—thereby enhancing myelin repair. Preclinical studies have shown that CVL-2001 can promote oligodendrocyte formation and remyelination in animal models and human brain organoids. The drug is currently in late preclinical development, with plans to advance into clinical trials following completion of safety studies[2][3][6].
