Drug intelligence / Profile preview
CVT-427 is a novel, investigational **inhaled formulation of zolmitriptan** developed for the acute treatment of migraines. Unlike traditional oral and nasal zolmitriptan, CVT-427 is designed to deliver zolmitriptan directly via pulmonary administration using proprietary ARCUS technology, resulting in **faster absorption, higher bioavailability, and less variability in plasma concentration compared to oral or nasal delivery**. It is intended for patients who may be dissatisfied with oral options, particularly those experiencing migraine-associated nausea or vomiting, or who require rapid onset of action. Zolmitriptan is a serotonin (5-HT) 1B/1D receptor agonist (triptan class) that acts by causing cranial vasoconstriction and inhibiting release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides from trigeminal nerves, thus aborting acute migraine attacks. CVT-427 has completed phase 1 clinical trials that demonstrated favorable pharmacokinetic and safety profiles in healthy adults, with the most common adverse events being mild cough and chest discomfort[1][3][5][13][15].
