Overview

**CX-1739** is a lead clinical-stage, low-impact AMPAkine developed by RespireRx Pharmaceuticals (formerly Cortex Pharmaceuticals). It acts as a positive allosteric modulator of AMPA-type glutamate receptors, enhancing glutamatergic neurotransmission with minimal receptor desensitization and reduced risk of excitotoxicity or seizures compared to traditional ampakines. CX-1739 has demonstrated preclinical efficacy in improving bladder function, motor activity, and respiration in spinal cord injury models, antagonizing opioid-induced respiratory depression without affecting analgesia, and enhancing oxygenation in sleep apnea. It has completed multiple Phase 1 safety trials (up to 1200 mg/day, half-life ~8 hours) and Phase 2 proof-of-concept studies showing target engagement, with a planned Phase 2A/2B trial funded by DoD for spinal cord injury bladder dysfunction.[1][2][4][5][7]
