Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**CX-546** is an ampakine small molecule developed by Cortex Pharmaceuticals that acts as a positive allosteric modulator of AMPA receptors, enhancing their activity to promote synaptic transmission and neuronal excitability. It has been investigated primarily for schizophrenia, where it restores disrupted prepulse inhibition (PPI) and latent inhibition (LI) in animal models, and shows potential in countering respiratory depression from opioids and barbiturates without diminishing analgesia. Additional preclinical research demonstrates neuroprotective effects against anesthesia-induced brain damage, analgesic properties alone or with morphine, and enhancement of astrocyte glucose utilization and cerebellar synaptic plasticity.
