Overview

CX-701 is a small molecule, high-impact (Type II) ampakine developed by Cortex Pharmaceuticals. It functions as a positive allosteric modulator of the AMPA (alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid) receptor, an ionotropic glutamate receptor essential for fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. As a high-impact modulator, CX-701 is designed to significantly enhance the amplitude and duration of the synaptic current, thereby potentially improving cognitive function and memory. The compound was initially targeted for the treatment of various neurological and psychiatric conditions involving cognitive impairment, with plans to enter Phase I clinical trials around 2007. However, development appears to have been discontinued as the compound is no longer active in the developer's pipeline.
