CX501 is a tissue-engineered cultured chimeric skin product developed by TiGenix (formerly Cellerix) for the treatment of skin lesions associated with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). The therapy consists of a bilayered structure containing allogeneic human keratinocytes and fibroblasts, typically sourced from neonatal foreskin, which are seeded onto a fibrin-based scaffold. CX501 is designed to function as a biological dressing or skin substitute that promotes wound healing by providing structural proteins and secreting essential growth factors and cytokines. This helps to stabilize the dermal-epidermal junction and accelerate re-epithelialization in patients who suffer from chronic, non-healing wounds due to genetic deficiencies in skin adhesion proteins.
