CXLO Corneal Strengthening Solution is a sterile ophthalmic solution intended for use in corneal cross-linking (CXL) procedures, primarily for the treatment of progressive keratoconus and secondary corneal ectasia. It contains riboflavin (vitamin B2, typically as riboflavin 5'-phosphate or sodium riboflavin phosphate) as the active ingredient, combined with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) in a buffered isotonic solution. The solution is designed for topical application during CXL procedures, where riboflavin acts as a photoenhancer, absorbing UVA (365 nm) light to generate reactive oxygen species (primarily superoxide anion). These reactive species induce additional covalent cross-links between collagen fibers, resulting in biomechanical stiffening of the corneal stroma, thus halting or slowing ectatic disease progression. The inclusion of HPMC, instead of dextran, helps avoid intraoperative stromal dehydration and maintains corneal thickness and transparency during the procedure.
