Cy5-CRT is a near-infrared fluorescent (NIFR) imaging probe developed for the targeted detection and surgical resection of glioblastoma (GBM). It consists of the fluorescent cyanine dye Cy5 conjugated to the CRTIGPSVC (CRT) peptide, which specifically targets Transferrin Receptor 1 (TfR 1). TfR 1 is frequently overexpressed in GBM tissues and the blood-brain barrier of tumor vessels compared to normal brain tissue. Developed by researchers at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, the probe is designed to assist neurosurgeons in identifying tumor margins during fluorescence-guided surgery. Preclinical studies in orthotopic U87 GBM mouse models have demonstrated that Cy5-CRT provides high-contrast imaging of intracranial tumors, enabling more precise surgical removal compared to conventional agents like fluorescein sodium.
