Overview

Cyamemazine is a typical antipsychotic drug of the phenothiazine class, primarily used in the treatment of schizophrenia and psychosis-associated anxiety. Despite its classification as a typical antipsychotic, it exhibits properties similar to atypical antipsychotics due to its potent anxiolytic effects and low risk of extrapyramidal side effects. Cyamemazine acts as an antagonist at multiple receptors, including dopamine D1–D4 receptors, serotonin 5-HT2A, 5-HT2C, 5-HT3, and 5-HT7 receptors, histamine H1 receptor, muscarinic acetylcholine M1–M5 receptors, and alpha1 adrenergic receptor. Its unique profile—especially strong antagonism at serotonin 5‑HT2A/2C/7—contributes to its anxiolytic action and reduced motor side effects compared to other phenothiazines. It was introduced by Theraplix in France[4][6].
