Overview

Cyanidin is a natural organic compound classified as an anthocyanidin, a type of plant pigment responsible for the red, blue, and purple colors in various fruits and vegetables such as berries and red grapes. In oncological research, cyanidin has demonstrated potential antimetastatic and chemopreventive properties. Specifically, it has been shown to inhibit the Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-beta)-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in glioblastoma cells. This pharmacological effect is mediated through the down-regulation of mesenchymal markers like fibronectin and snail, as well as the inhibition of Smad2, ERK, and JNK signaling pathways. While primarily recognized as a dietary constituent and nutraceutical, its ability to modulate cellular migration and invasiveness makes it a subject of interest in cancer prevention and treatment strategies.
