Overview

Cyanoacrylate is a family of fast-acting synthetic adhesives widely used in industrial, household, and especially medical settings. In medicine and surgery, cyanoacrylates serve as tissue adhesives (also called "组织胶" in Chinese), providing rapid wound closure by forming strong covalent bonds with tissue proteins upon contact with water or blood. This polymerization process results in a durable bond that can replace or supplement traditional sutures and staples for external wound closure and hemostasis. Medical-grade cyanoacrylates include n-butyl cyanoacrylate and 2-octyl cyanoacrylate; the latter is less toxic and more flexible for skin applications (e.g., Dermabond). Cyanoacrylates are also used to bond medical devices due to their biocompatibility and strong adhesive properties. While generally safe when properly applied topically or externally on tissues/devices, they may cause local irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals[2][3][4][5][6][7][9].
