Overview

Cyanobacterial extract L26-O is a research-stage organic extract derived from the cyanobacterium *Anabaena* (strain HAN 21/1), which was originally isolated from a gastropod in the Baltic Sea. Identified in a 2014 screening study, the extract demonstrates potent pro-apoptotic activity against acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell lines, including rat IPC-81 and human Molm-13 cells. Its primary mechanism involves the induction of apoptosis through the Bcl-2-mediated pathway, notably allowing it to overcome chemoresistance in cells that overexpress the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. The extract does not exhibit microcystin-like toxicity and its activity is independent of p53 status, making it a potential lead for the development of novel AML therapeutics.
