Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form of vitamin B12 used to treat and prevent vitamin B12 deficiency. It is essential for DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, neurological function, and cell metabolism. Cyanocobalamin acts as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions necessary for the conversion of homocysteine to methionine and methylmalonic acid to succinyl-CoA. It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as pernicious anemia (caused by lack of intrinsic factor), malabsorption syndromes (including after gastric or intestinal surgery), certain inherited disorders affecting absorption or metabolism of vitamin B12 (such as methylmalonic aciduria), and dietary deficiencies. Cyanocobalamin can be administered orally or by injection; injectable forms are often used when absorption from the gut is impaired[1][2][4][5][7].
