Overview

Cyanocobalamin Co-57 is a radiolabeled form of vitamin B12 used as a diagnostic agent, primarily for the diagnosis of pernicious anemia and other conditions related to malabsorption of vitamin B12. It contains cobalt radioisotope 57Co incorporated into the cobalamin molecule. The compound is administered orally or in capsule form, and its absorption can be measured to assess intrinsic factor function and intestinal absorption capacity. Cyanocobalamin Co‑57 acts as a radiopharmaceutical; after administration, its uptake and excretion are tracked using gamma detection methods to evaluate gastrointestinal absorption defects such as those seen in pernicious anemia, celiac disease, Crohn's disease, blind loop syndrome, diverticulitis, severe pancreatitis, tropical sprue, or lesions in the small intestine[1][3][5]. The drug was approved by the FDA in 1968 for these diagnostic purposes[3].
