Overview

Cyclamen europaeum is a plant whose root and underground stem (rhizome) are used in traditional medicine and homeopathy. It is most commonly used as a homeopathic remedy for conditions such as gastrointestinal disturbances (including indigestion), menstrual irregularities (such as scanty menses), headaches (especially in the forehead and temples), vertigo associated with menstruation or weakness in the chest. In conventional herbal use it has been taken by mouth for "nervous emotional states" and digestive problems; however oral use is considered unsafe due to toxicity at low doses. Cyclamen extracts have also been formulated into nasal sprays for rhinosinusitis to help loosen mucus and drain sinuses[1][3][5][7]. The mechanism of action is not well established but may involve local irritation or stimulation of mucosal secretions when used nasally[1]. In homeopathy it is prepared via serial dilution.
