Overview

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) is a ubiquitous intracellular second messenger that plays a critical role in transducing the effects of various hormones and neurotransmitters. In clinical practice, particularly in China, exogenous cAMP and its derivatives are utilized for their positive inotropic and vasodilatory effects in treating chronic heart failure, myocarditis, and sick sinus syndrome. Beyond cardiology, cAMP is being investigated for its hematological benefits; compound preparations such as Su-Li-Sheng (a plant-derived extract containing cAMP) are studied for their ability to improve chemotherapy-related anemia (CRA). The drug is thought to stimulate erythropoiesis and enhance the bone marrow microenvironment by activating cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) and other downstream signaling pathways like EPAC, which regulate gene expression and cellular metabolism.
