Cyclic peptide 3b is a preclinical-stage cyclic amphiphilic peptide being developed by the Chapman University School of Pharmacy in collaboration with AJK Biopharmaceutical and InfeXtious Therapeutic. It is specifically designed to combat Gram-positive bacterial infections, including multi-drug resistant strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The drug's mechanism of action involves the direct targeting and modulation of the bacterial cell membrane. By interacting with the lipid components of the membrane, the peptide induces structural disruption, leading to increased permeability, leakage of cellular contents, and eventual bacterial cell death. This membrane-active approach is intended to provide a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive pathogens while minimizing the potential for the development of resistance compared to traditional antibiotics.
