Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cycloartanol is a naturally occurring cycloartane-type phytosterol isolated from *Aloe vera* gel. It acts as an agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), specifically activating PPAR-alpha and PPAR-gamma. In preclinical models of obesity and type 2 diabetes, such as Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats and diet-induced obesity (DIO) mice, oral administration of cycloartanol has been shown to improve hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and visceral fat accumulation. These metabolic benefits are mediated through the upregulation of PPAR target genes involved in fatty acid beta-oxidation (such as ACOX1) and the downregulation of lipogenic and gluconeogenic enzymes in the liver.
