Overview

Cyclobutrifluram is a novel small molecule pesticide developed primarily as a succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) inhibitor, targeting the mitochondrial electron transport chain complex II (succinate:ubiquinone oxidoreductase)[3][1][5]. It functions as a selective SDH inhibitor (IRAC Group N-3), disrupting ATP production in the mitochondria of nematodes and fungi, leading to impaired survival, growth, and reproduction of these pests[1][3][5]. Cyclobutrifluram is used as both a seed and soil treatment, protecting plant roots by controlling major plant-parasitic nematodes (e.g., Meloidogyne, Pratylenchus, Heterodera, Nacobbus species) and certain soil-borne fungal diseases (e.g., Fusarium, Macrophomina phaseolina, Alternaria dauci, Cercospora carotae)[1][7]. Developed by Syngenta, cyclobutrifluram is notable for its effectiveness against nematodes, including Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (pine wood nematode), and for reducing the incidence of diseases such as pine wilt disease[3]. In laboratory studies with Caenorhabditis elegans, cyclobutrifluram significantly decreases germ cell proliferation and fertility, indicating its mechanism of action involves inhibition of mitochondrial complex II, which is critical for cellular respiration[5]. Cyclobutrifluram is formulated as a suspension concentrate (SC) for agricultural use, typically applied to soil or seeds, with products like TREFINTI (turf nematicide, 450 g/L cyclobutrifluram) manufactured overseas[1]. It is stable under normal storage conditions for at least one year[1].
