Overview

Cyclopentamine is a sympathomimetic alkylamine and vasoconstrictor that was formerly used as an over-the-counter nasal decongestant, primarily in Europe and Australia. It acts as a releasing agent for the catecholamines norepinephrine (noradrenaline), epinephrine (adrenaline), and dopamine, which underlies both its decongestant effects (via norepinephrine and epinephrine) and stimulant properties (via all three neurotransmitters). Structurally, it is related to methamphetamine but differs by having a cyclopentane ring instead of an aromatic phenyl ring. Cyclopentamine has been widely discontinued due to safety concerns, limited effectiveness, and the availability of safer alternatives such as propylhexedrine. It was also noted to be a very weak alpha-adrenergic receptor stimulant and weak beta-adrenergic receptor blocker[1][2][3][4][5][7][8].
