Overview

Cyclopentolate is a small molecule anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) drug used primarily in ophthalmology to induce mydriasis (pupil dilation) and cycloplegia (paralysis of the ciliary muscle), facilitating diagnostic procedures such as eye examinations and refraction testing. It acts by blocking muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the eye—specifically on the sphincter muscle of the iris and the ciliary body—leading to relaxation of these muscles. This results in rapid pupil dilation and loss of accommodation for near vision. The onset is typically within 15–60 minutes after topical application with effects lasting up to 24 hours or longer in some individuals. Cyclopentolate is available only by prescription[1][2][3][4][5].
