This is a combination regimen consisting of three drugs: - Cyclophosphamide, an alkylating agent that interferes with DNA replication and transcription, leading to cell death. - Doxorubicin, an anthracycline antibiotic that intercalates into DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II, preventing DNA repair and synthesis. - Leuprolide acetate, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist that suppresses the production of sex hormones by downregulating pituitary GnRH receptors. This combination has been studied in premenopausal women with breast cancer. The addition of leuprolide acetate to cyclophosphamide-doxorubicin-based chemotherapy has been shown to reduce the risk of premature menopause by preserving ovarian function during treatment[1]. Cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin are commonly used together as part of standard chemotherapy regimens for breast cancer due to their synergistic cytotoxic effects on tumor cells[2]. Leuprolide acetate is included for its protective effect on ovarian function during cytotoxic therapy.
