Overview

This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of four drugs—cyclophosphamide, fluorouracil (5-FU), prednisone, and vincristine. Each component has a distinct mechanism of action: - Cyclophosphamide is an alkylating agent that crosslinks DNA, leading to cell death. - Fluorouracil (5-FU) is an antimetabolite that inhibits thymidylate synthase, disrupting DNA synthesis. - Prednisone is a synthetic glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties; in cancer therapy it can induce apoptosis in certain lymphoid cells. - Vincristine is a vinca alkaloid that inhibits microtubule formation during mitosis. This combination has been studied for the treatment of various solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. While similar regimens are more commonly documented with additional agents such as methotrexate or doxorubicin, this specific four-drug combination represents an intensive multi-agent approach targeting multiple pathways involved in tumor growth and survival[1][2][4].
