Overview

This investigational combination treatment regimen, developed and studied by Western Regional Medical Center, consists of low-dose cyclophosphamide followed by outpatient intravenous interleukin-2 (IL-2) for the treatment of metastatic melanoma. Cyclophosphamide is a small molecule alkylating agent that, when administered at low doses, is intended to selectively deplete regulatory T cells (Tregs), thereby reducing tumor-mediated immunosuppression. Interleukin-2 is a cytokine biologic that stimulates the proliferation and activation of effector T cells and natural killer (NK) cells to enhance the body's anti-tumor immune response. The regimen is designed to improve the therapeutic index of IL-2 by priming the immune system with chemotherapy in an outpatient setting, specifically targeting patients with advanced melanoma.
