Overview
This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of four drugs: - Cyclophosphamide (an alkylating agent) - Vincristine (a vinca alkaloid) - Doxorubicin (also known as Adriamycin, an anthracycline antibiotic) - Dexamethasone (a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid) The regimen is used primarily for the treatment of hematologic malignancies such as lymphomas and multiple myeloma. Each component has a distinct mechanism of action: - Cyclophosphamide crosslinks DNA, leading to cell death. - Vincristine inhibits microtubule formation in mitosis. - Doxorubicin intercalates into DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II. - Dexamethasone exerts anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. CVAD may be used alone or as part of more complex regimens like hyper-CVAD. It is not associated with a unique brand name but is referred to by its acronym or full generic names[2][1].
