Overview

Cyclopiazonic acid is a fungal secondary metabolite belonging to the class of organic compounds known as 3-alkylindoles. It is produced by certain species of Aspergillus and Penicillium fungi. Cyclopiazonic acid acts as a potent inhibitor of the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca²⁺ ATPase (SERCA), disrupting calcium homeostasis in cells. It is primarily studied as a mycotoxin due to its presence in contaminated food products and its toxic effects on animals and humans. There are no approved pharmaceutical uses for cyclopiazonic acid; it is considered an experimental compound for research purposes only[1][2].
