Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The Cyclosporin A intravitreal implant is a sustained-release drug delivery system developed by the National Eye Institute (NEI) for the treatment of chronic, non-infectious uveitis. The implant contains cyclosporine A, a small molecule calcineurin inhibitor that suppresses T-lymphocyte-mediated immune responses and cytokine gene expression. By delivering the medication directly into the vitreous of the eye, the technology provides long-term therapeutic concentrations (lasting 6 months to 3 years) while avoiding the severe systemic side effects, such as nephrotoxicity and hypertension, often caused by oral cyclosporine administration. This investigational product was evaluated in Phase 1 pilot studies to assess safety and efficacy in patients with active uveitis who were candidates for systemic immunosuppression.
