cyclosporine + erythropoietin + granulocyte colony-stimulating factor + prednisone is an experimental combination regimen investigated by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for the treatment of low-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). This therapeutic approach, termed 'cytokine-immunotherapy,' combines the immunosuppressive effects of cyclosporine (a calcineurin inhibitor) and prednisone (a corticosteroid) with the hematopoietic stimulatory effects of erythropoietin and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). The rationale for this combination is based on the hypothesis that immune-mediated suppression of hematopoiesis contributes to bone marrow failure in MDS; by modulating the immune system while simultaneously providing growth factor support, the regimen aims to restore effective blood cell production and improve cytopenias in patients with low-risk disease.
