Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This triple-drug immunosuppressive regimen, consisting of **cyclosporine**, **mycophenolate mofetil**, and **prednisone**, was specifically evaluated by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) for use in HIV-infected patients undergoing renal transplantation for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The regimen is designed to be compatible with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), addressing the challenge of preventing organ rejection without further compromising the patient's already weakened immune system or causing adverse drug-drug interactions with HIV medications. Cyclosporine acts as a calcineurin inhibitor to block T-cell activation, mycophenolate mofetil inhibits inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH) to suppress lymphocyte proliferation, and prednisone provides broad anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects through glucocorticoid receptor agonism.
