Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cyclosporine ophthalmic solution is a topical immunosuppressant used in the treatment of ocular surface diseases. It acts as a calcineurin inhibitor that blocks T cell activation and reduces ocular inflammation. This mechanism increases tear production in patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye disease) and helps treat other inflammatory conditions of the eye such as vernal keratoconjunctivitis. Cyclosporine also improves goblet cell density and has anti-apoptotic properties on the ocular surface. The drug is formulated to address its poor aqueous solubility through emulsions or nanomicellar solutions for better bioavailability and tolerability[3][6][7][8].
