Overview

Cyfluthrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide used widely in agriculture and residential pest control. It acts as a neurotoxin in insects by interfering with the function of voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cells, causing prolonged depolarization, repetitive nerve firing, and ultimately paralysis and death. Cyfluthrin is effective both through contact and ingestion. It is less toxic to humans and mammals due to rapid metabolic breakdown but highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. The compound was first developed by Bayer in 1980[6][1][5]. Commercially available as mixtures of isomers, it is formulated for use on crops such as cotton, cereals, corn, fruit, potatoes; for turf management; ornamentals; wood protection; household pest control; aerial agricultural applications; and even cattle ear tags[1][2]. Its mechanism of action involves disruption of axonal sodium channel function (MoA 3a), leading to constant muscle spasms followed by paralysis or starvation in target pests[4][8].
