Cymbopogon proximus extract is a preparation derived from the aerial parts of the wild grass Cymbopogon proximus, used in Egyptian and Sudanese folk medicine. The extract comprises essential oils and various metabolites, notably sesquiterpenes (e.g., proximadiol, β-eudesmol, α-eudesmol) and flavonoids (e.g., apigenin, luteolin derivatives). It exerts multiple pharmacological activities, including antispasmodic (smooth muscle relaxation without abolishing propulsive activity), diuretic, antihypertensive, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and antimicrobial effects. Mechanistic studies and phytochemical profiling suggest activity is mediated via smooth muscle relaxation (potentially through calcium channel-blocking and antimuscarinic effects), modulation of pancreatic TNF-α, enhancement of GLUT4-mediated glucose uptake, and antioxidant defenses. Traditionally, the extract has been employed for nephrolithiasis, renal colic, urinary tract conditions, hypertension, nervous and gastrointestinal disorders, and as a general sedative[1][2][3][4][5][6][9].
