Overview

Cynanchum atratum, known in traditional Chinese medicine as Baiwei, is a perennial herb from the Apocynaceae family that has been utilized for over 2,000 years for its antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties. The medicinal portion consists of the dried root and rhizome, which contain a diverse array of bioactive C21 steroidal saponins. Traditionally, it is indicated for the treatment of yin-deficiency fever, postpartum fever, urinary tract infections, and inflammatory skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis. Modern pharmacological research has explored its potential in metabolic health, specifically for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) through the activation of the AMPK pathway, and in dermatology for its anti-melanogenic effects mediated via the cAMP/MITF signaling pathway. It is typically administered as a botanical extract rather than a purified pharmaceutical compound.
