Overview
Cynaropicrin is a natural sesquiterpene lactone of the guaianolide type, primarily found in the leaves of the artichoke (*Cynara scolymus*). It is known for its diverse biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiparasitic, and antineoplastic properties. Recent research has identified cynaropicrin as a natural covalent inhibitor of the NLRP3 inflammasome, directly binding to the NACHT domain of NLRP3 and suppressing its ATPase activity. This mechanism has shown promise in preclinical models for alleviating sepsis-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Additionally, cynaropicrin has been investigated for its potential as a pan-genotypic entry inhibitor for hepatitis C virus (HCV) and as an agent against trypanosomiasis.
