Overview

Cynodon dactylon, commonly known as Bermuda grass, is a plant whose extracts and pollen are used for medicinal purposes. Standardized extracts of its pollen are approved for the diagnosis (via skin prick tests) and treatment (via immunotherapy) of allergic rhinitis in individuals sensitized to the grass. [9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 20] These allergenic extracts work by inducing an immune response to ameliorate allergy symptoms. [18] Additionally, extracts from the plant, particularly ethanolic and aqueous extracts, have been investigated in preclinical and traditional medicine for a variety of therapeutic properties, including hepatoprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic effects. [2, 3, 4, 5, 8] For instance, an ethanolic extract was shown to protect against dexamethasone-induced liver damage in animal models, an effect attributed to its antioxidant activity and ability to reduce glucose uptake. These therapeutic uses are largely based on traditional medicine and preclinical data, with limited robust clinical evidence in humans for non-allergic conditions. [4, 5]
