CypCel

CypCel is a minimally-invasive diagnostic biomarker test developed by ZymagenX (as the successor to ImmunogenX) for monitoring small intestinal villi health and recovery in patients with celiac disease, particularly those adhering to a gluten-free diet. The diagnostic method utilizes an oral dose of simvastatin, a cholesterol-lowering medication that is highly metabolized in the small intestine by the enzyme Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) expressed on the intestinal villi. Following ingestion, blood samples are collected at specific time points to measure simvastatin concentration. In patients with healthy or recovering villi, high CYP3A4 metabolic activity leads to reduced simvastatin levels in the blood, whereas patients with damaged villi exhibit higher concentrations, thereby serving as a non-invasive alternative to endoscopy and biopsy.
