Overview

Cyperi rhizoma is the dried rhizome of Cyperus rotundus L., a plant in the family Cyperaceae. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is known as Xiang Fu and is classified as a Qi-regulating herb. It is primarily used to promote the free flow of Liver Qi, regulate menstruation, and alleviate pain. Clinically, it treats conditions such as liver qi stagnation (manifesting as hypochondriac pain or abdominal distension), irregular menstruation and dysmenorrhea, breast distension due to liver qi stagnation, depression-related symptoms, flatulence, hernia pain from cold stagnation in the liver meridian or stomach cold with qi stagnation[1][4][5]. The main active chemical constituents include sesquiterpenoids (such as α-cyperone), monoterpenes (pinene), and other volatile oils[3][6]. Pharmacological studies suggest anti-inflammatory effects and analgesic properties; modern research has explored its use for migraine prophylaxis by regulating neurogenic inflammation and vasomotor factors[2][6]. It enters the Liver and San Jiao meridians according to TCM theory.
