Overview

Cyproterone is a synthetic steroidal antiandrogen and progestin used primarily in the treatment of prostate cancer and to control hypersexuality in men. In women (as cyproterone acetate combined with estrogen), it is used for severe acne and hirsutism. Its mechanism of action involves blocking androgen receptors to prevent testosterone and dihydrotestosterone from binding to their targets in tissues such as the prostate. It also suppresses luteinizing hormone secretion via negative feedback on the hypothalamo-pituitary axis, reducing testicular testosterone production. Additionally, it has progestational effects by activating progesterone receptors[1][4][5][6].
