Overview

Cysteinamide is an amidated derivative of the amino acid cysteine and belongs to the class of alpha amino acid amides. It is a small molecule with the chemical formula C3H8N2OS. Cysteinamide has been studied primarily in experimental and biochemical contexts rather than as an approved pharmaceutical drug. Its most notable biological activity is as an inhibitor of tyrosinase (TYR), a key enzyme in melanin synthesis. By inhibiting tyrosinase and diverting dopaquinone to form DOPA-cysteinamide conjugates instead of dopachrome, it reduces eumelanin production in melanocytes without cytotoxic effects. This property makes it relevant for research into skin pigmentation regulation and potential dermatological applications[6][2]. Additionally, its thiol group confers antioxidant properties and copper chelation ability[6].
