This is a combination therapy used for the treatment of newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in patients with FLT3 mutations. The regimen consists of two chemotherapy agents—cytarabine and daunorubicin—combined with the targeted agent midostaurin. Cytarabine and daunorubicin are traditional chemotherapeutic drugs that destroy rapidly dividing cells, including cancer cells. Midostaurin is a small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor that blocks several kinases, most notably FLT3, which is frequently mutated in AML. By inhibiting FLT3 and other kinases such as c-KIT and PDGFR, midostaurin disrupts signaling pathways essential for leukemia cell proliferation and survival[1][2][6]. This combination has been shown to improve outcomes in patients with FLT3-mutated AML when used during induction (initial) and consolidation phases of chemotherapy[1][2][5].
