Overview

Cytomegalovirus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CMV CTLs) are a form of adoptive cell therapy used to treat and prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or solid organ transplantation. These are T cells specifically reactive to CMV antigens such as phosphoprotein pp65 or immediate early-1 (IE-1) protein. CMV CTLs can be derived from donors (including third-party donors) or expanded from granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-mobilized hematopoietic progenitor cell products. They function by recognizing and eliminating CMV-infected cells, providing long-term protection against CMV reactivation. This therapy is particularly valuable for treating refractory CMV infections that are resistant to conventional antiviral medications.
