Cytomegalovirus subunit vaccine glycoprotein B refers to a class of recombinant protein vaccines designed to prevent infection by Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV). The vaccine targets glycoprotein B (gB), a critical envelope protein involved in viral attachment, fusion, and entry into host cells. By presenting a recombinant version of gB—often the extracellular domain—to the immune system, the vaccine aims to elicit high titers of neutralizing antibodies and prime T-cell responses. These vaccines are typically formulated with potent adjuvants, such as MF59 (in the Sanofi/Chiron candidate) or proprietary GSK adjuvant systems (in the GSK1492903A candidate), to overcome the relatively low immunogenicity of subunit antigens. Clinical development has focused on preventing primary infection in seronegative women and reducing viral complications in solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.
