Overview

Cytoparin is a heparin-based cell therapy coating developed by Corline Biomedical, specifically designed for pancreatic islet cell transplantation in patients with Type 1 Diabetes. Utilizing the proprietary Corline Heparin Conjugate (CHC™) technology, Cytoparin consists of macromolecular heparin conjugates where approximately 70 heparin molecules are covalently linked to an inert carrier chain. The coating is applied ex vivo to islets prior to transplantation using a biotin/avidin technique. Its primary mechanism of action is to create an endothelial-like surface on the islets, protecting them from the instant blood-mediated inflammatory reaction (IBMIR) by inhibiting complement activation, coagulation, and innate immune responses upon exposure to blood in the portal vein. This protection is intended to improve islet survival and engraftment, potentially reducing the number of donor organs required per patient. The technology has been evaluated in clinical trials and has received regulatory authorization as an Advanced Therapy Medicinal Product (ATMP) in Europe.
