Overview
D-alpha-Tocopherol acetate is the natural form of vitamin E (specifically the RRR stereoisomer) and is used to treat and prevent vitamin E deficiency. It acts as a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes from oxidative damage by scavenging free radicals. D-alpha-Tocopherol also inhibits protein kinase C activity, downregulates adhesion molecules such as Intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and Vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) on endothelial cells (reducing blood cell adhesion), and has antithrombotic effects by influencing platelet aggregation pathways. It may be beneficial in cardiovascular disease prevention, some cancers, immune enhancement, certain neurological diseases (including Alzheimer's), eye disorders like cataracts, diabetes, premenstrual syndrome, and skin protection from UV irradiation. The compound is widely used in dietary supplements and dermatological products due to its stability compared to non-acetylated tocopherols[1][4][5][8].
