Overview

D-arginine is the D-enantiomer of the amino acid arginine. Unlike L-arginine, which is a natural substrate for nitric oxide synthase and involved in numerous physiological processes such as cell division, immune function, and vasodilation via nitric oxide production[6][7], D-arginine is not directly utilized in these pathways. It is widely used as an inactive control in studies of the L-arginine/nitric oxide pathway[2][5]. However, research indicates that D-arginine itself may have pharmacological activity; at certain doses it can display central stimulant or depressant effects and has shown anticonvulsant properties in animal models[2][5]. It has also been studied for its potential neuroprotective effects against glucocorticoid-induced neurotoxicity[8] and investigated for roles in metabolic disorders and brain development[3][4]. In supplements and research settings, it may be used to enhance nitric oxide production (though less efficiently than L-form), improve blood flow, support cardiovascular health, or as a nutrient supplement.
