Overview

D-Aspartic Acid (D-Asp) is a naturally occurring D-amino acid found in various tissues, including the central nervous system, endocrine glands, and exocrine tissues like salivary glands. It is also present in certain foods and available as a dietary supplement. D-Asp plays a role as a signaling molecule in the nervous and neuroendocrine systems, influencing the release and synthesis of hormones such as luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), growth hormone (GH), prolactin, oxytocin, vasopressin, and testosterone. It also functions as an endogenous neurotransmitter and agonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR), contributing to neuroplasticity and brain activity. D-Asp has been investigated for its potential to improve fertility, boost testosterone levels, and reduce symptoms of schizophrenia, although research findings are mixed and further studies are needed.
