Drug intelligence / Profile preview
d-carnosine is a non-natural enantiomer of the endogenous dipeptide L-carnosine. Unlike L-carnosine, which is rapidly degraded in human plasma by the enzyme carnosinase-1 (CN1), d-carnosine is highly resistant to carnosinase-mediated hydrolysis, giving it a significantly improved pharmacokinetic profile and greater plasma stability. It acts primarily as a scavenger of reactive carbonyl species (RCS), such as 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE), thereby preventing the formation of advanced lipoxidation end products (ALEs) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Preclinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing carbonyl stress, inflammation, and tissue damage in animal models of diabetic nephropathy, atherosclerosis, and acute ischemic stroke.
